Chia seeds belong to the mint family and are found growing from Mojave Desert till Argentina. Chia was a major crop grown by the Aztecs. The roasted chia seeds were mixed with water and eaten as porridge. They were also grinded into flour and used for baking. Indians also made poultice out of chia seeds to treat health problems. It was believed that one tablespoon of chia seeds had enough energy to sustain a person for full 24 hours. Even hikers who travel long distance on foot eat chia seeds for energy.
